The match marked a blemish on Pep Guardiola’s career. It was the first time in his 882nd game that Guardiola scored four goals and conceded four goals in the same game.

Manchester City took the lead in the 25th minute. Elling Holland headed home a penalty kick to make it 1-0.

Chelsea quickly responded. In the 29th minute, Thiago Silva rattled the Manchester City net with a header off a corner kick from Conor Gallagher.

With momentum on their side, Chelsea pulled a goal back. In the 37th minute, a ball that missed Josuco Gvardiol found Leo James, who flicked the ball the other way for Raheem Sterling to finish.

Manchester City equalized before the end of the first half. In second-half stoppage time, they earned a corner and Bernardo Silva’s floated ball was headed home by Manuel Akanji to equalize.

It was Manchester City who took the lead again. In the second minute of the second half, a cross from Julian Alvarez was met by a stumbling Holland, who got a foot on it to make it 3-2.

In the 22nd minute, Chelsea pulled one back. After Gallagher’s mid-range shot beat Ederson, Nicholas Jackson slotted the ball into the back of the net.

In the 41st minute of the second half, City took their third lead. Rodri’s left-footed shot deflected off a defender and into the net for the fourth goal.

Late stoppage time, with Manchester City on the verge of a one-goal victory. The home team, Chelsea, created ‘theater’. A foul on Ruben Dias resulted in a penalty kick, and Cole Palmer stepped up to the plate to make it 4-4. Palmer, a former Manchester City player who has been in a Chelsea shirt since the start of the season, stole the show for his hometown team.

“If you thought we were going to win 7-0 here, you’re wrong,” Guardiola said. “Every season I’ve come to Stamford Bridge, it’s been difficult. It was the same when I was at Bayern Munich or Barcelona,” he said.

“It was an entertaining game that was a good advertisement for the Premier League. Both teams wanted to win,” he said, adding that “Chelsea is a team with fantastic players.”

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino praised his players for their mental strength, saying, “Against a team like Manchester City, they showed that they have the ability to score goals, dominate (the game) and create chances.”

“It can be a starting point to build confidence and have more faith in our way of playing. I think it was a game that showed us that this is the way we want to compete in the future.”
