City won 3-0 at home against Young Boys (Switzerland) in their fourth Group G match of the competition at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, England, on Monday (Aug. 8).
With the win, their fourth straight in the group and 12th overall, City have secured at least second place in the group and a spot in the round of 16 regardless of the outcome of their remaining two matches. Young Boys, with a 1-3 record, were eliminated.
Holland, who finished as the UCL’s top scorer with 12 goals last season, followed up his two goals against Young Boys with a second consecutive multi-goal game to take his tally to four, putting him firmly in contention for the title for a second consecutive season.
With Alvaro Morata currently leading the way with five goals, Holland is now tied for second with Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid) and Evaniusong (Porto).
Holland opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, calmly converting a penalty kick from Mateusz Nunes.
City added a second in first-half stoppage time when Phil Foden found the back of the net with a left-footed shot from the right side of the opposition penalty area to make it 2-0 at the break.
Six minutes into the second half, Holland scored his second goal of the match with a left-footed strike from the left side of the penalty arc.
In Group G, Leipzig (GER) also advanced to the Round of 16 with a 3-1 record after defeating Tsrvena Zvezda (Serbia) 2-1 earlier in the day. Tsrvena was eliminated along with Young Boys with a 1-3 record.
In Group H, FC Barcelona (Spain) fell to a 0-1 defeat away to Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine).
Barcelona, who would have qualified for the round of 16 with a win, improved to 3-1-1 (9 points). They remain top of the group, but the gap between them and Porto (3-1) and Shakhtar (2-2), who beat Antwerp (Belgium) 2-0 earlier in the day, has narrowed and they will have to wait for the results of their remaining two matches.
Barcelona, who fielded most of their first-team players including Robert Lewandowski, Hapinha and Ferran Torres, were unable to find the back of the net despite dominating possession throughout.
Instead, they conceded a header to Shakhtar’s Danilo Sikan in the 40th minute and were unable to overcome the deficit.
